As keyboards replaced cursive, backspace replaced erasers and whiteout. Then touchscreen keyboards emerged, yet backspace remained unquestioned and unchanged. On a touchscreen, backspace functions as it does on physical keyboards, as if there were a real key with a pressure pad underneath.
